Mineral Supplements

There exist many forms of mineral supplements. A few of the most popular ones are listed here:

Calcium Supplements

Found abundantly throughout the human body, Calcium is necessary for the correct formation of our teeth and bones. Calcium is also used for transmitting nerve cell signals and is also used in blood clotting. Calcium also plays a role in muscle contraction and has been shown to help with the production of lymphatic fluids. Calcium is considered an essential mineral. A lack of calcium at any point in your life can impact tooth and bone formation. Long term lack of calcium in the body can lead to a condition known as osteoporosis, in which the bones become fragile and prone to fractures. Though osteoporosis is common in post-menopausal women, it does also affect men. Therefore, at the top of our list in mineral supplements, is Calcium. Make sure that your diet is rich in cheese, milk, yogurt and other dairy products to ensure proper intake of Calcium. We recommend Calcium supplements to help maintain a good level of Calcium in your body; especially for those that are lactose intolerant. Click here for more Calcium supplements

Zinc Supplements

Zinc is a widely used essential element throughout the human body. It can be found in oysters, most animal proteins, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, nuts, beans and whole grain breads. Zinc deficiency can often lead to hair loss, skin lesions and other health problems. Zinc is essential to proper memory function and is also linked to taste smell and eyesight. Clinical tests have proven that Zinc supplements when taken with antioxidants can delay macular degeneration, which is the #1 cause of blindness related to aging, primarily in those over 50 years old or more. Zinc deficiency can create a number of other problems, especially for women who are pregnant and for young children. This is because Zinc is essential to human brain development, both before and after birth. In addition, Zinc deficiency produces a decrease in appetite, which become Anorexia nervosa (often called Anorexia). Zinc supplements are used in the treatment of Anorexia nervosa to help increase appetite. Zinc is also used to combat/prevent gastrointestinal infections and for thousands of years, people have been using Zinc to combat pathogens. This is primarily attributed to Zinc ions and the devastating effect they have on bacteria and viruses. Zinc is simply an all around powerhouse nutrient with multi-faceted involvement throughout the human body. Click here for more Zinc Supplements

Iron Minerals

Iron minerals or iron supplements are used to treat or prevent low blood levels of iron (e.g. for anemia or during pregnancy). Iron is a mineral that is an essential constituent of blood and muscle, and is required for the transport of oxygen. The primary role of iron relates to the ability of red blood cells to adequately carry oxygen to sustain the body’s cellular support. When the body is deficient of iron serious medical problems can arise.

There are two forms of dietary iron: heme and non-heme. Sources of heme iron include meat, fish and poultry. Sources of non-heme iron, which is not absorbed as well as heme iron, include beans, lentils, flours, cereals, and grain products. Other sources of iron include dried fruit, peas, asparagus, leafy greens, strawberries, and nuts.

Athletes
Endurance athletes may need one-third more iron than non-athletes. Athletes should choose several iron-rich foods every day, or take the necessary supplements.

Vegetarians
Vegetarians need more iron in their diets than non-vegetarians because the iron from plant foods is not as well absorbed as it is from animal foods.

When taking iron supplements, it is important to remember that eggs and milk decrease iron absorption. Coffee and tea that is drunk with a meal or one (1) hour after a meal may also decrease iron absorption. It is important to make sure however, to keep your iron intake within the limits of the RDA, as iron overdoses can occur with symptoms such as diarrhea and abdominal pains. Also, we recommend taking iron supplements in capsule form, because taking iron supplements in liquid form can sometimes result in discoloration of the teeth.
